Mother and Son

I was a little worried about this one at first because the photo was taken on a phone and had pretty poor lighting.  It gave me a chance to explore technology a bit by changing the lighting in the photo on my computer though, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I have an event coming up and thought I should have some small paintings up for grab.  I'm not really used to painting small and since I don't love painting still lives, I wasn't too sure what to paint.  Kid hands are really sweet so I liked this idea.  I don't have much time left before the show, but I'd like to keep this theme going.

Austin Bike Trail

I've been trying to create scenes of Austin that show what I love about it.  It's very urban without losing it's love of nature and that was what I was going for here. My goal is to create paintings of Austin that aren't too specifically Austin and could be appreciated anywhere, which is tricky sometimes.

I finished this portrait a while ago but it was a surprise for my Mom's birthday so I couldn't post it.  It was my Grandma's idea and a gift from her.  She was an adorable little girl and a lovely lady today.

Okay I admit it, I mainly did this to have a cool new profile picture on Facebook.  I've yet to have a real, current photo for my profile.  I have a thing about it.  I never liked creating a voicemail message with my voice, either. I guess I like a certain amount of anonymity.
I do admire David Bowie and loved the composition of the album cover Aladdin Sane, which this is obviously stolen from.  I think I want to do more white backgrounds because that's what excited me most about this.

The lady that commissioned this portrait wanted to combine what I used to do (paint whimsical, sassy girls from my imagination) with what I do now (paint portraits from photographs).  I tried to tell her no, I couldn't pull that off, but for some reason she had faith in me and wouldn't take no for an answer.  I'm so glad for that because this was a lot of fun and made me realize I can paint portraits that aren't exactly like the photo, or in this case, nothing like it.  Yay for new ground!

Awesome Old Ford

Oops!  Just realized I never posted this one.  The guy that owns this car lives on my street and recently traded this awesome car for another awesome car.  I will miss seeing this one everyday though.  I can't say that many cars (any) have inspired me to paint them like this one did.  I hope she went to a good home.

Nolan and Caleb

I got behind!  I guess that's a good thing.  These two cuties were commissioned by a neighbor to be a Mother's Day gift for his wife.  I'm usually worried one will be better than the other when there are two, but I can honestly say I'm very happy with both of these.  I'm feeling a little more comfortable with improvising changes that aren't in the photo.  In the top painting, his feet were cut off in the photo and in the bottom one, there was a parent's hand and foot in the way of his body to make sure the little guy didn't fall in.

Austin Skate Park

My son recently took up skateboarding and we've been enjoying this place a lot.  It was hard to get a good photo with everyone whizzing around so quickly, but I liked how the boy's red hat popped out in this one.  It kind of reminded me of Sandra Flood's work, which I love.

Graffiti Over Town Lake

Anyone that lives here knows that Austin is funky, in a good way. Any city can have a beautiful building or landscape, but I find those paintings kind of boring. Every once in a while I see something that shows the personality of a place and I just have to jump on it because I often look for that and can't seem to find it.

Amy's Ice Cream

I thought I'd try something new and painted the canvas bright red and let it dry before starting the painting. I love the effect of the little bits of red showing through and wonder why I never did this before. I feel like a whole new world has opened up and think I'll be experimenting with underpainting for a while.

This cutie is the sibling of Kendal, one of my personal favorites. I'm bartering paintings for haircuts with their mom and I love the idea of trading services. Unfortunately, she doesn't have any more kids, so I guess I'll have to start paying her :(

Cool Kids

This is the third one of these kids. I've never met them but I feel as though I know them now. I'm loving painting hair these days. The girl in this painting really likes her accessories, and they make the hair go in multiple directions which keeps things interesting.
