David Ohlerking is having another self-portrait show at the Austin Figurative Gallery and I want to be in it. The first one was a blast. There was a huge turnout and it was so much fun matching the artists with their portraits. I also feel sort of sentimental about it since that show inspired me to try doing a portrait, even though I was quite certain I would be awful at it and hate doing it. Here I am a few months later with a little portrait career and loving it. Goes to show, you don't know yourself as much as you think you might...

I was so happy to get another commission for a toddler portrait. I had fun with the last couple of paintings, but I missed painting my babies!

I have a bad habit of doing things I'm not ready for. It's like sitting down to play the piano for the first time and expecting to be able to pull off Chopin. I had a heck of a time with the hands in this one and I blame Stephanie for complimenting my hands in the last post, which must have cursed me ;) Anyway, I've always loved watching breakdancers and felt inspired to try painting one.

Monday Morning

I've slowed down a bit these days because of the holidays. I also spent some time creating my new site. That's really not my area so if you have any suggestions for improving it, I 'd love to hear 'em.

There's something magical about pigtails. I'd wear them myself if that wouldn't be ridiculous.

This one presented a challenge because I've always avoided painting teeth. If you look back, most of my subjects have closed mouths. If they do have teeth, they are very suggested. My artist friends tell me baby teeth are particularly difficult. I'm happy with how they turned out and now I'm not so scared of painting teeth, so thanks, Zoe!

Don't Look, Grandma! Another Nude

I did this at a life drawing group last night. I like it better than my first nude, maybe because I decided to bring my paints this time. I'm much more comfortable painting than drawing, although it's a lot less convenient and much more expensive! I'm not sure what I'll do with it, maybe I should distort her and dress her up, turn her into one of my sassy girls. Hmmm....

A really cute costume on a really cute girl. I love Halloween.

This little guy has the prettiest blue eyes. I had fun with this one because I got to concentrate on his face and not mess with clothes and arms as much. I hope you guys are enjoying these toddler portraits because there's quite a few more on the way!

Here's another one of our sweet little friends. If you're going to have to study someone's face and look at them for hours, toddlers are the way to go. They're very easy on the eyes, especially when they have pigtails.

I Know You Didn't

One day I will look into the psychology behind why I'm driven to paint this same subject over and over.
More kiddo portraits are on the way. Thanks to all my mama friends for all the business!

This is another portrait for a friend. Vivian and my son go way back to 2006, which in toddler years is half a lifetime.

Wednesday, October 3, 2007

This is a portrait I just finished for my friend Katie. I honestly didn't think I'd like painting children but I really do. They are just so sweet and fun to look at, especially at this age. I've got another toddler portrait lined up that I'm really looking forward to, so look for that in a week or so.

Love Sign

This is my tribute to sign interpreters. It seems like an art to me because it's so expressive and beautiful to watch.

Nude Study

I'm attending some figure drawing groups with my friend Sarah. She did an awesome little painting of the same pose. I've done nothing but paint for years so drawing seems new and different. I'm going to try to go at least a couple of times a month so look for more nudes in the future.

Freckle Face

So here's yet another typical Dani painting. I'm trying to pump some quickies out for the Artist Market this weekend. Wish me luck! This is my first attempt at freckles. I hope I pulled it off and she doesn't seem like she desperately needs a dermatologist appointment.

Sad Lamb the spirit of my upcoming favorite holiday, obviously not his.

See ya

Doing the portraits has been great and I plan to continue with that but I felt the need to step back into Daniworld and do one of my typical hip, sassy girls. It's what I love to do most and I think this is my new favorite.

This is my friend Mariah, who kindly volunteered to be my "muse" so you may see more of her in the future. Although she may change her mind when she sees the paintings. She's much prettier than this! This was also my first attempt at using a palette knife. I had no idea what I was doing but it was fun anyway.

She Sang in Spain

Lessons I Learned From This Painting:

1) If you're starting something new, start simple. For example, if you are just starting out painting from photos, don't pick a picture with a gajillion people in it thinking it will be "fun".
2) If you are going to paint from a photo with a gajillion people in it, be prepared to spend a lot of time and paint on it.
3) It's hard to paint your mother and I didn't capture her like I wish I could.
4) You don't have to be super happy with all your paintings, sometimes it's just time to move on to something else. This one was hard for me but I couldn't spend another day on it without pulling out my hair.
5) I have a lot more of these lessons to go and a long way to go as an artist.

On to something much simpler!

Funky Shoe

I'm a woman. I love shoes, what can I say? Although I doubt I'd make it to the front door in these. Maybe that's why I painted it, to leave the boring world of flip-flops and tennis shoes I live in for while.

Party Girl

This took way longer than it should have considering it's size (7x9). Painting small is hard!

Self-portrait, Completed

I'd love to hear anything anyone has to say about this. Perspective is always hard for me and this one is particularly difficult since it's me.

Work in Progress

So there was a local call for entries for self-portraits size 16x20 and I happened to have a canvas that size handy AND I'm driven to paint more true-to-life these days. Therefore, it seemed meant to be that I should do a self-portrait. It still has a long way to go, but I think it's a decent start (looks kind of like me, right?). I'll post it again when it's done, hopefully next week if not sooner.

So this is what I've been working on the last couple of days and I'm pretty pleased with it. I had the pleasure of attending an awesome workshop taught by Carol Marine. The workshop involved painting still life, which is pretty much the opposite of what I normally do. So those of you familiar with my style will recognize that the subject is much more real than they are in most of my paintings.

The Beginning

Hey everyone! I was inspired to try out blogging by some artist friends that have daily painting blogs. While I don't aspire to complete a painting everday at this point, I do have a momentum going and have been working on art daily. My intentions for this blog are to keep that momentum going as I'm sure I will feel a need to put something new on here consistently. I hope visitors feel free to comment as I am always looking for feedback, even when it's not positive. Wish me luck!
